Blog Update: January 2013

Since I’m a huge fan of measuring things, I thought it would be fun and maybe even informative to chronicle my progress blogging.  I’ll try to make these posts short, so that I can focus my time on writing actual content.

History

In late December of 2012, about the time of the Mayan apocalypse (Coincidence? I think not.) I decided to start this blog.  On January 1st 2013, the blog launched.

Over the course of January, I published 16 posts.  I’ve succeeded in publishing at least 3 posts per week including a new dividend stock analysis every Monday.  Goals achieved!  I plan to try to keep up this pace into the months ahead.

Two awesome things happened at the end of January.  First, my article on my money mistakes got published in the Carnival of Personal Finance #397.  Then, the same article got mentioned in a link roundup by The Simple Dollar.

Ways to Follow the Blog

You may have noticed that there are now four ways to follow the blog: RSS, eMail, Twitter, and Facebook.  Pick your favorite one from the collection on the right so that you’ll never miss an update.

Stats

I was averaging about 50 unique visitors a day at the end of January.  And then I got linked by the Carnival of Personal Finance and The Simple Dollar.  The last two days in January had about 190 unique visitors.  I hope that everyone who visited my humble blog liked what they saw and decides to come back for more.

January Page Views: 4,466 page views this month.

Alexa Ranking: This blog has gone from 25,000,000 to 1,183,344.  Lower is better, by the way.  So I’m making progress!

MozRank: 2.94/10 (higher is better)

PageRank: 0/10 (higher is better)

I have no idea whether these stats are good or bad for a new blog, but I’m really happy that people are visiting, reading my posts, and commenting.  You guys and gals are great!

Expenses and Income

Expenses:

$-28.00,  The cost of the domain name registration.

Income:

$0.00

The blog is hosted on wordpress.com, so while you see ads, I make nothing off of them, it all goes to wordpress.com.

Readers:  If you like what you’ve seen so far, please follow the blog via RSS, email, or Twitter.  If you have something you’d like me to write about, I take suggestions.

    My Fi,

Keep up the great work man. You have great content and I really love the fact that there are a good group of us young guys actively pursuing financial freedom. Mutual inspiration is really priceless. Good luck with further success!

    Best wishes.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement. I’m planning on February being another solid month of blogging and dividend growth investing. Unless the market keeps shooting up and none of my limit orders execute.

That’s excellent progress MyFI!. I thinkI started a little over 5 weeks ago also with a similar set of numbers. I need to look into some of those other ranks you mentioned. I’m only familiar with the Alexa rank. Ultimately good content = good results in my view. Keep it up!

  3. I’m enjoying it so far! I’m jealous you only paid $18 for your site. I paid almost $200!!

    1. I only paid for the domain name. The site is on wordpress.com and so is free. I’d really like to invest in a more professional site. Maybe a few months down the line, I’ll make the leap.

You are doing extremely well!!! I had 1/10th of that page views my first month. Keep up the quality of content, I am sure it will grow exponentially. One thing you might want to consider is moving to self-hosted. Startup package costs as low as $30/year, you can make that back with the ads you are showing anyway (and giving to wordpress.com). Just a suggestion…

    1. I’m thinking about moving to self hosting. But I’m cheap, so I’m hesitant to spend more money until I can prove to myself that I can keep this blog train moving. I don’t like buying something and then never using it.
