Portfolio Status: July 2013
Continuing with my goal of financial transparency, I’m posting my portfolio as it is at the beginning of July of 2013.
Under the portfolio tab above is where I am keeping a more or less current list of my positions. The below is where my portfolio stands as of July 1, 2013. Also, check out the dividends and options pages where I am tracking each of those.
2013 Portfolio Value as of:
- January 1st: $91,567.06
- February 1st: $95,514.53
- March 1st: $99,743.57
- April 1st: $102,160.83
- May 1st: $111,056.49
- June 1st: $115,388.08
- July 1st: $121,356.66
June represented another amazing month of growth for me. Keep in mind that the market has been flat or trending downward over most of the month, so almost all of that growth represents additions of new capital. I sold two puts (O and DLR) and bought about $3,500 worth of O and DLR as well. It’s been a great month for adding REITs to my portfolio.
In terms of dividends, I pulled in $452.89 in June of 2013. Best month yet!
To date, I have pulled in $1,760.82 in dividends for 2013. This means that if I do nothing else this year, I will blow past my goal of collecting $3,000 in dividends and make my stretch goal of $3,500 in dividends. The big question now is can I hit $4,000 in dividends this year?
2013 Monthly Dividends:
- January: $164.00
- February: $265.11
- March: $326.64
- April: $301.76
- May: $295.42
- June: $452.89
One of my major goals for this year and next year is to substantially increase my emergency fund pile of cash to leverage put options against, which also doubles as an emergency fund so that it can cover one full year’s worth of my expenses ($35K). So let’s track that too:
2013 Cash Pile Value as of:
- January 1st: $4,753.16
- February 1st: $7,353.16
- March 1st: $8,965.33
- April 1st: $10,560.33
- May 1st: $12,168.49
- June 1st: $13,768.49
- July 1st: $15,363.49

Lot of stocks there. Are you managing them all yourself? Nice work with those dividends. Are you reinvesting them or taking the money as income? Up 24% overall is a great year to date for you.
I’m managing everything myself. Dividends and options premiums are all reinvested.
Congrats on a nice month! Almost $1,800 in dividends in the first half is great. Well ahead of where I’m at. I’m looking at getting some REIT exposure. I currently have a put option on O that is in the money but there’s a long way to go before expiration. I’m looking at adding some on some further weakness. At some point that will come.
Do you have a blended yield or yield-on-cost for your portfolio?
I don’t have a blended yield or YOC yet. I’ve been meaning to make one, but just haven’t gotten around to it.
I wouldn’t worry about your dividends. You invest a lot more than I am able to each month, you’ll probably blow me out of the water next year with your dividends.
Curious to know what percent of the 24% is due to contributions?
For this month, I think most of gains are contributions. Not to spoil an upcoming article, but my internal rate of return for the 38 months that I’ve been a dividend investor is 18.2%/year.
MFIJ,
Wow! Great month. You’re killing it. Fantastic stuff.
Congrats on the dividend income. It looks like you’re definitely going to hit your goals. My goal is also $3,500 in dividend income during the calender year of 2013 and so far I’m pretty close. We have a very similar portfolio value so I hope we both nail it!
Best wishes.
DM,
You’re the one who told me a few months ago that I’d make $3,000 easily and should be shooting for $3,500. So I set that has a stretch goal for the year. Now it looks like this year is going so well that $4,000 might be achievable.
I’m pretty sure that you’re going to make $3,500 as well. You’ve got a great savings rate a solid portfolio.

Wow, your doing awesome so far this year. You have a lot of the same names I have in my portfolio. You just have a lot more shares.
Keep up the good work,
CD
Thanks. Most dividend investors are concentrated on finding great value, and the universe of dividend paying stocks isn’t that big so it doesn’t surprise me that we have a lot of the same holdings.
Nice progress — getting over $450 in dividends in a month is great. It’s awesome that you’re on pace to meet your stretch goal — keep it up!
Thanks! I’m just moving one step at a time. Each month I invest more money and the dividends go up.
